Facilitation Micro-Skills Seminar

Staying healthy in sick organizations
The clover practice TM

An interview with Kathleen A Paris, PhD, Author of "Staying Healthy in Sick Organizations"

An interview with Kathleen A Paris

Kathleen A. Paris, holds a Ph.D., in educational administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She compares organizations to the human body, asserting that just like people many organizations are tired, sluggish, have compromised immune systems, and are not as productive as they could be. “Modern organizations are plagued by three culprits: obsolete hierarchical, patriarchal command and control structures and methods; too many people without adequate management preparation or motives, and willingness to cling to illusions. These same factors that give organizations their ailments, create stress and sometimes quite toxic work environments for their employees.”

“Some organizations just have sniffles, but some are so pathological, anyone who wants to be emotionally healthy has to get out. Most people have more career choices than they think they have.” Paris also encourages everyone do their “grown up” homework. “Some of the behaviors we learned as children coping with family situations may not serve as well as working adults. She provides a series of questions to help get that homework started.

In this interview we discuss the following questions:

bullet What is The Clover Practice™?

bullet Why should someone follow this practice?

bullet How did you decide on these three principles for The Clover Practice™?

bullet You say in the book that most organizations are sick. What do you mean by that?

bullet What has created unhealthy organizations?

bullet What evidence do you have that most organizations are sick by your definition?

bullet Is this book for “people on the front lines” or for managers or top leaders?

bullet You have said that this book is about “waking up.” What do you mean by that?

bullet What about scenarios where it’s not safe to tell the truth?

bullet You urge people to leave workplaces that are extremely toxic. How realistic is this in the current economy?

bullet You say “You are selling your labor. Are you getting a good deal?”
What do you mean by that?

bullet Your aim is for people to have peace of mind and less stress at the end of the workday and to be more emotionally healthy. How do you define emotional health?

bullet One chapter is called “Doing Your Emotional Homework.” What’s that all about?

bullet You say this book is for Americans working in America? Why?

bullet Whose work has influenced you?

bullet What’s next for you?
